Longtime, committed, and knowledgeable Jennifer Beals’ fans have known for quite some time that the actress and the character that we loved to watch her bring to life for 6 seasons, Bette Porter, are actually not that different from one another. Sure, Beals is straight and Porter wasn’t an actress, but one thing that does make it difficult to distinguish one woman from the other at times is their mutual impressive ability to eloquently and intelligently describe their projects and passions in a way that makes you feel like you need to become more cultured, ASAP. Take, for example, these quotations from the personalized note that Beals wrote for her latest project (which became available last week), The L Word BOOK:
“During the six years we were shooting The L Word, I kept a photographic journal of the cast and crew, born out of a profound desire to create a bulwark against my rapidly eroding memory. It was an era of my life I was eager to preserve: I wanted to remember the cast, the readthrus, the dinners, the rehearsals — everything.”
“The L Word was about the power of storytelling. And it was particularly unique because there were two streams of stories being told. Clearly we were telling your stories, but in some way we were telling our stories — the story of a group of colleagues who became friends while endeavoring to make something worthwhile. Somewhere along the line there was a kind of convergence. Somewhere underneath the plotlines of The L Word ran our own stories of friendship and struggle.”
“The L Word as a series was, at its core, about community and that played out behind the scenes as the cast formed its own community. But the series also was about all of you who made our collective journey possible.”
It’s hard not to imagine our ever-passionate Bette bringing a voice to the above. However, Beals is an artist on her own, separate from her alter-ego, and she has proven it with her groundbreaking journal that takes you behind-the-scenes of the ground-breaking Showtime series. The photos (some of which are featured here) were all taken by Beals in her attempt to capture the memories of her experience on the series and share it with all its fans.
The L Word BOOK features 218 pages with over 400 never-before-seen photos, cast commentary, bits of scripts, callsheets, and production memos that span the six seasons of the show. The book measures 7″ x 9″ and includes a custom L die-cut cover with pink placeholder ribbon making it a perfect coffee table piece to give as a gift or purchase for yourself.
The book is available now with or without a custom dedication page. The custom dedication offers you an area in the front of the book to personalize the copy for yourself or friends and family that you may give the book to as a gift. And in the coming weeks you will also be able to order a personalized version of the book that includes your own photos and memories.
The proceeds from the book will go to several different charities including the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Mia Kirshner’s I Live Here Projects, a Project of ETINA and The Pablove Foundation.
