Founded by Allen Cole, the Film Festival in Sacramento started in 1992, based on the student-run gay and lesbian film festival at Fresno State. Organizers joined forces with the students from California State University, Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Alliance and the brothers of the Delta Lambda Phi Fraternity and received grant funds from CSUS Associated Students Inc. to use as seed money and get the Festival started.
Held on October 8th, 1992, the first year was a big success, with a sold out, one evening event at the Crest Theater. They continue this tradition of presenting the Festival in early October to celebrate “National Coming Out Day.”
This year’s festival will feature a Marriage Equality Celebration on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 2:00 PM where more than a dozen couples have registered to exchange marriage vows. As detailed in the Sunday Sacramento Bee, same sex couples will marry their love, toast with champagne and even smear cake on each other’s face, all for the price of a theater ticket!
Each year brings growth and opportunities to show more films, give more money to beneficiaries, and support their newest program, providing completion grants to film makers.
