ITV 2’s new comedy-drama brought witches and lesbians to the nation’s TV screens last week. “Switch” centers around four young women who must come together to make their magic work. A strong cast, it features lesbian Stella, who works in advertising, played by well-known soap actress Lacey Turner, The Inbetweener’s Hannah Tointon. and Caroline Quentin.
The debut episode opened with a rather dramatic scene. It seems Lacy Turner hasn’t forgotten how to do Eastenders-style trauma – beginning with: “the body’s in the other room.”
It turns out to be a cat, but still. The girls get to work on their first spell to bring it back to life. Predictable, but it’s different so we can cope with the cheese.
The episode introduces all four of their lives, against a trendy Camden backdrop. Jude, played by Nina Toussaint-White, occupies herself at work in a fashion store by turning a handsome man straight, and sex–crazy for her, by wearing a brooch that casts a spell on him. She ends up disappointed about his true sexuality and gives the magic accessory to her colleague, a very camp male shop assistant who can’t believe his luck.
Next, Stella is sacked for flipping out at her patronizing, ill-mannered boss and so the girls get working on their witch skills to undo the situation. But, oh-so-shockingly, turn back time too far and the woman’s memory is erased to the age of 17. Cue boy band and underage drinking jokes.
Next, the girls are to have a run-in with the, slightly posher, upper-class female witch clan of Kensington. Hopefully some lesbian action from Stella too.
