Hot off the presses, the new indy comic “One Night Stand,” written by David Hopkins, is available now at select stores. The mini-comic series (that is the collaborative work of 32 artists) features a collection of one-page stories all about “casual encounters” where sex and intimacy, guilt and anonymity, and risk and fantasy are explored. Out lesbian artist Cat Staggs illustrated a lesbian story for the comic entitled “Darcy” and called on her actress-fiancé (FEED’s Amanda Deibert) as a model for the character.
Staggs has illustrated over 130 cards for the Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith card set for TOPPS and joined the Star Wars / LUCASFILM family in 2004, which brought her into the forefront of Star Wars fandom. In addition to her work in that galaxy far, far away, Cat also works in the comic book and film industries – ranging from creating original character sketches for a new character by Stan Lee for POW! Entertainment to her work on Rittenhouse Archives’ Complete Marvel Avengers, X-Men Archives, and DC Legacy card sets, as well as The World’s Finest VS trading card game and Iron Man I and II trading cards for Upperdeck. Her work has also been featured on The Lord of the Rings Evolution and Masterpieces card sets and three sets featuring Indiana Jones for TOPPS.
In her art for “Darcy” (pictured above), Staggs illustrates a man talking to a woman, telling her he likes her. The woman looks down and beams…and then the full shot reveals that she is actually looking down beaming at her girlfriend. The man is Colin Firth and the lesbian couple is watching Bridget Jones’ Diary.
The story behind “Darcy” stems from Hopkins’ friendship with a woman who recently came out as a lesbian and is having a difficult time dealing with it. This page in the book was his way of telling her that she is wonderful just as she is, being the person she is supposed to be. (The line from the film that is featured in the comic reads: “I like you…very much…just as you are.”)
“One Night Stand” also deals with straight sex, random hook ups – both lesbian and straight – and there is even a threesome thrown in a time or two. So, there is a little something for everyone.
Artists included in the book, in addition to Staggs (pictured left), are: Christopher Higginson, Ryan Dunlavey, Jason Copland, Sina Grace, Mark Murphy, J.E.
