Lesbians Represent on Tuesday Evening TV

From The CW all the way over to Bravo, girl-on-girl relationships were being explored on television last night. The highly anticipated 90210 Rumer Willis lesbian storyline with Jessica Lowndes, who plays main character “Adrianna” finally kicked off with a friendship and a kiss and Patti Stanger, the “Millionaire Matchmaker,” helped a female client explore her bi-curiousity in a surprisingly respectful and genuine way.

Rumer Willis, as “Gia,” looked the part of a rich lesbian high school student in recovery last night, but unfortunately when she spoke we were reminded that she has some connections in Hollywood. Hopefully as the character and her storyline with Adrianna – who kissed her to help her out in an awkward situation with her ex (Mandy Musgrave!?) – develop, so will Willis’ skills on camera. It would be great to see the relationship between the two last for multiple episodes (the network has promised that it will) but time will tell.

Patti Stanger, on the other hand, did a great job in just one episode of representing the lesbian community. When million-heiress Tricia explained that she was open to dating both men and women Patti didn’t judge or jump right into supporting her client. Instead she made sure that bi-curious Tricia was genuinely emotionally ready and open to dating women – having her meet with a therapist – before she exposed lesbians to dating her. It was a respectable move on Patti’s part because she took her pool of lesbian daters into consideration before presenting them with someone who was truly only into men. Even though Tricia ended up choosing androgynous Tyler as her date, she ultimately realized that she was more on the straight side of the sexuality scale – but just in documenting her short journey to figuring it out Stanger showed all her viewers that it’s really no big deal either way.

Overall, it was a good night for lesbians on TV – far better than last week when Mariska Hargitay crushed us with her rejection of Kathy Griffin’s lesbian advances.
