Lesbian Tennis Legend Martina Navratilova Honored at US Open

On Monday night, tennis legend Martina Navratilova was honored at the US Open, for her accomplishments both on and off the court, and also in acknowledgement of her recent battle with breast cancer. In her brief speech, the 53-year-old addressed the challenges she faced coming out nearly 3 decades ago: “In 1981, I came out as a gay woman…. That was not a good thing to do back then. There were a lot of doors that were shut in my face because of that, but you know what, I could still play tennis, no matter what.”
