An LGBT activist’s view of entertainment and world news.
As an LGBT activist, the promotion of queer rights is #1 on my homosexual agenda. This weekly column serves as a forum for me to comment on issues and causes currently affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals. My “rundown” of these topics is from the perspective of an LGBT activist; it is my goal that by keeping our community informed, we can all help contribute to the battle for equality.
Gay Military Families Left Out
First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden joined forces to start a new military family initiative called Joining Forces, but it excludes gay military families. In a statement to the Advocate magazine, Kristina Schake, Communications Director to the first lady, confirmed that Joining Forces would not include gay families because Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell is still the law. Alex Nicholson, Executive Director of Service Members United, which is the group that represents LGBT troops, stated that exclusion of LGBT service members was unwarranted and the military has stated that repeal may happen by the end of the summer.
Kobe’s Homophobic Slur
Los Angeles Laker’s star Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 for calling referee Bennie Adams a f**king fa**ot! WOW KOBE! REALLY? Bryant apologized on Wednesday for the nationally televised outburst during the game against the San Antonio Spurs. The incident was broadcast on TNT network. NBA Commissioner David Stern fined the star guard immediately and Bryant plans to appeal the fine.
Jackson’s Gay Harassment
A complaint was filed with the Chicago Human Rights Commission on Thursday by Tommy R. Bennett stating he was harassed, discriminated against and bullied by co-workers at Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition. Bennett states that after working there for two years he was laid off because he was gay. Jesse Jackson and the Coalition issued a joint statement unequivocally denying all of Bennett’s allegations as completely false. In Bennett’s statement, his co-worker Caroline Wiggins openly stated she did not want to work with Bennett because of his sexual orientation. Also in his compliant Bennett claims on a company trip in 2008, Jesse Jackson summoned Bennett to his room to apply cream to a rash between his legs. I CAN TELL THAT THIS IS GOING TO GET REALLY UGLY!!!!
Transwoman to Head Democratic Group
Brittany Novotny was elected president of the Young Democrats of Oklahoma. Novotny is the first transgender person elected to head the young Democrats in the organization’s history. Last year Novotny unsuccessfully challenged homophobic Oklahoma politician Sally Kern. Novotny also served as chair of the LGBT caucus of Oklahoma.
