Gallery GRRL LA: January

Happy New Year! December was a little lean on the gallery scene, though no doubt we were all pretty busy anyway. Now January is bouncing back with a slew of new shows – if you can, save Saturday the 12th in particular, when over 30 gallery and museum openings and events turn L.A. into a potential art oyster. (Check out the guide for a handful of suggestions, many of which are grouped close enough to see in a single evening!)

Art Walk Dates:

Abbot Kinney – January 4th

Downtown LA – January 13th

2nd Saturday Long Beach – January 12th

Pomona – January 13th & 27th

Friday, January 4th

Junko Mizuno – Euphoria, and Lisa Petrucci – Come Play With Me

Petrucci’s darkly saccharine visions of childhood and B-movie pop poster paintings seek to satisfy the twisted kid in all of us, while Mizuno delivers exaggerated sexuality and mythological imagery in her Japanese-style drawings. Though very different in terms of color and content, these bodies of work represent the boundlessness of both artists’ imaginations.

Opening Receptions: 8:00pm to 11:00

Laura Menz – Synthetic Minds, the Photographs of Laura Menz

Photographer and professional model Menz explores the self over the course of three series: Androids depicts the human body as still-life, even as by nature it defies stillness; Three Acts, where Faith, Hope, and Charity reveal a body in motion and ever-changing; and Kopfgeburten (literally “head births” in German, meaning creations of the mind), a set of images describing the struggle of the mental structure to integrate and repel external forces.

Miriam Wosk – Abundance and Devotion: The Art of Miriam Wosk, and Samira Yamin – We Will Not Fail

A double opening mid-month at SMMoA. Abundance and Devotion is the first major survey of Wosk’s paintings and collages, where glitter and seashells layered amid pictures of natural elements create dazzling celestial, terrestrial, and oceanic landscapes. We Will Not Fail centers around the October 1, 2001 cover of TIME Magazine, the photo of Osama Bin Laden layered in geometric patterns representing Islamic views on the structure of the universe. Alongside this image, other photos of presumed insurgents, American soldiers, and civilians are also treated to Yamin’s hand-cut embellishments, giving viewers a sense of their connection to each other, while simultaneously blurring the work’s intended perspective – the “we” of the exhibit’s title.
