Fresh Ten Favorite Scenes from the L Word

You know a show is good when after only six seasons you are left with so many classic moments of amazing acting, superbly written dialogue, and truly moving scenes that compiling only ten favorites seems almost impossible to do. Lesbians everywhere are counting down the final days of the show that forever changed the way our community is portrayed on television and in this sad time Cherry Grrl decided to reminisce with some of our best memories. It was hard to narrow it down, but here are our Fresh Ten Favorite Scenes from the L Word.
10. Cast party fun. All of the actresses who make up the cast of the L Word share a unique talent that they each had the chance to demonstrate at least once over the course of 6 seasons: they play drunk very well. When Jenny invited her friends and her cast over for a house party in season 5, fun music, some pot brownies, and a lot of alcohol created what appeared to be a very good time. The singing and dancing on the table was entertaining enough but when Dawn Denbo arrived with her lover Cindy to threaten Shane (who couldn’t even get their names right in her drunken state) things got hysterical.
9. Captain Stubing and Julie. The adorable couple that was Alice and Dana decided to bring a little toy with them and play dress up (Love Boat style) on an Olivia Cruise. What they didn’t decide to do was wear that little toy during a dinner at the Captain’s table when they unexpectedly get rushed out of their room – that part just kind of happened on its own.
8. Operation steal that sign. In the finale episode of season 4 Bette really was in love with Jodi. She was so determined to prove her feelings for the artist that she enlisted Alice and Shane to help her steal a giant sign from the top of a building because Jodi had mentioned an admiration for it. Goofy Alice and extremely skinny Shane likely don’t make for the two best choices when undergoing a mission like this one (Max and Tasha probably would have gotten it done faster) but watching the three women fight off guard dogs and allude security was pretty great.
7. Shane is screwed. The sudden romance that formed between best friends Shane and Jenny was difficult to understand from the moment that it began this season, but it seems like Shane is starting to regret getting involved with the crazy one. With each new episode, Jenny reaches new levels of overbearing girlfriend and when confronted by Shane with the suggestion that maybe they focus on their friendship – which she feels is more important – the reaction is classic Jenny and a moment only lesbians can understand. Jenny: “The only thing that’s gonna get in the way of our friendship is if something gets in the way of our romantic relationship.” Oh Shane, you are in TROUBLE.
6. Cris-pay. Three lesbians walk into a girl bar and proceed to check out the offerings. They soon notice a young woman they haven’t seen before. The funny lesbian comments, “new blood,” the cool lesbian comments, “fresh meat,” and the dorky lesbian comments, “cris-pay!” Dana, Dana, Dana.
5. Tasha Gets Herself Discharged. They asked and she told – and in doing it Tasha stood up to the military and defended her right to be open about who she loved, even if it meant an end to her career in the service. The scene when she and Alice reunite and embrace on base in front of men and women service members alike was pretty awesome.
4. The L Word goes to jail (part 1). After a heated argument with protesters outside Bette’s art center the ladies are forced behind bars. As each of them check in to their assigned cells the exchanges that occur are classic to each character: Bette can’t depart with her sunglasses, Shane doesn’t want to let go of her cell phone, Dana is nervous, and Alice –well she just makes fun of everyone else.
3. Alice and Jenny fight over Lez Girls. Without a doubt, the show would not have been as funny had Leisha Hailey never joined the cast. One perfect example of her impeccable comedic timing occurred during an argument with Jenny over Jenny’s too-close-to-real-life book, Lez Girls. During a confrontation between the two about the story Jenny defends her writing by saying, “Oh I’m sorry Alice for using my imagination. Oh wait a minute, do you hear that, oh God it’s Monet, he’s come back from the dead and he wants me to give you a message. He says, I’m sorry for sitting in front of my pond in France and using those water lilies as actual inspiration!” Alice’s response: “Wait he’s talking to me too… so weird…ok, I’ll tell her. He said don’t ever fucking compare yourself to him again!”
2. Bette’s bad day. With Tina gone and work as stressful as ever, Bette spent the majority of season 2 in a bad mood. But, when her distracted state caused her to crash her car into another driver, her hostile reaction was priceless. The poor little man had no idea who he was dealing with when he ran up to her car and demanded she get out so her could yell at her. Bette’s response as she towers over him: “You need to stop yelling. No one was hurt, I have insurance, so just shut the fuck up, do you fucking understand me you fucking idiot, (shouting) or do I need to scream like you, like a fucking insane savage?!” The little man responds: “You’re gonna be one sorry bitch!” Bette grabs him by his shirt and hauls him up to her level and screams “What makes you think I’m not already?! What makes you think I’m not already?!” Her feelings are obviously more about her having ruined her relationship with Tina than the car wreck itself but either way it made for an amazing scene for J. Beals.
1. Is Lara Perkins a lesbian? Some of the best moments throughout the course of the show definitely occurred when the entire cast was together. When Dana was struggling to figure out if her “soup” chef crush played for the same team she called on her friends to help her out. Bette, Tina, Alice, and Shane soon descended on Lara’s workplace to, as Bette explains: “deploy a mission to ascertain the disposition and intent of one Miss Lara Perkins.” The result was classic L Word.
