Fresh 10 Female Comic-Book Characters

With Comic-Con – the event of the year for the comic book community – hitting San Diego this week, we decided to honor some of the female characters that we feel lesbians have appreciated the most. From the obvious (like our out and proud girl Batwoman) to the bad girls (like Tank Girl and her massive inappropriateness) these are our Fresh 10 Female Comic Book Characters. (Feel free to add your own to the list!)

10. Poison Ivy. She may be a supervillainess, but Pamela Lillian Isley (a.ka., Poison Ivy) does seem to care a lot about the environment, which is pretty cool of her. Just watch out for her toxic kiss, which she administers to both men and women.

9. Storm.
Orphaned as a child, Ororo Iqadi T’Challa went on to become a member of the X-Men and is also the first black female comic book character to play either a major or supporting role in the big two comic book houses, Marvel Comics and DC Comics. And she can control the weather. And she was played by Halle Berry.

8. Wonderwoman. Wonder Woman was created as a, “distinctly feminist role model whose mission was to bring the Amazon ideals of love, peace, and sexual equality to a world torn by the hatred of men” – which is great – but it’s her adorable outfit that has truly endeared her to Halloween-costume shopping ladies for decades.

7. Tank Girl. She’s “prone to random acts of sex and violence, hair dyeing, flatulence, nose-picking, vomiting, spitting, and more than occasional drunkenness” – but who hasn’t fallen for a girl like that at some point?

6. Andromeda Attumasen. Raised by her father as a boy, trained in the arts of hunting and war, she exceeded any other male except for her father in these skills, but was still considered unworthy of being his successor simply because she was a woman. Despite that, she went on to develop the ability to live both in and out of water and gain an extensive knowledge of biochemistry.

5. Psylocke. Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock (Psylocke), a member of the X-Men, won IGN’s Battle of the Comic-Book Babes ’06 contest – beating out the female computer icon Lara Croft. That’s actually more impressive than her ability to read and control minds.

4. Catwoman. Another Halle Berry role was that of Catwoman, in a 2004 film about the legendary supervillainess.  Although she wore no costume or disguise at all in her first appearance, Catwoman went on to sport some of the hottest skintight ensembles ever.

3. Invisible Girl/Invisible Woman.
Susan Storm, Invisible Girl, has the ability to bend and manipulate light to render herself and others invisible. She is also the only female member of the Fantastic Four.

2. Rogue. You have to feel for this member of the X-Men…Rogue considers her powers a curse because she involuntarily absorbs the memories, physical strength, and (in the case of superpowered persons) the abilities of anyone she touches, preventing her from making any physical contact with others – which in real life would be pretty disappointing for those around her since she was #4 on IGN’s Top Ten X-Babes list for 2006.

1. Batwoman. She’s a lesbian… we had to give her the number 1 spot.
