Facebook Bans Ad For Lesbian Film

April 27, 2009 · Print This Article

The women behind the upcoming lesbian film “And Then Came Lola” are angry at the social networking site, Facebook (FB), and for very good reason – FB unfairly banned an advertisement for the film.

The “And Then Came Lola” team attempted to place a FB advertisement for the film to a target market:  lesbians (women users indicating they were interested in women) over the age of 18.  The advertisement (featured left) was deemed inappropriate by FB for the noted reasons:

* “That images that are overly explicit, provocative or that reveal too much skin are not allowed.”

* “Images that degrade or idealize any health condition or body type are also not allowed.”

The photo in question is of three women (the film’s stars: Ashleigh Sumner, Cathy DeBuono, and Jill Bennett) standing close together, fully clothed, with little skin exposed. The creators of the ad admit that it is an intimate photo but it’s meant to be fun and flirty, just like the film itself, and maintain that there is nothing unseemly going on within the shot and that its relevance to both the target audience AND the product it is promoting is unquestionable.

With the help of LOLA fans, an “And Then Facebook Shunned Lola” fan page has been created and is gaining steam.  You can view it here:

Try it on MySpace. Facebook is more for corporate and academic uses (that’s why I love it). You gotta admit that there is a little bit of close up touching there. If it was a guy that would be considered sexually provocative.

Way to flip the coin huh.
