If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them! Enlightenment Productions Launches Legal Downloads of Movies and Music. Romantic comedy ‘I Can’t Think Straight’ and moving drama ‘The World Unseen’ have scooped more than 30 international awards and have been a hit with audiences worldwide. They’ve also been a hit by illegal downloaders. Piracy has hit the entire movie industry in the last few years, but has been particularly hard on independent directors like Shamim Sarif, a modern Renaissance woman who, with partner Hanan Kattan, has raised finance, written, produced, directed and sold both movies.
Now Enlightenment is offering movie lovers who prefer their films on their laptops or iPhones a legal way to buy them as downloads from www.enlightenment-productions.com.
The response has been encouraging: “People are loving the crisp, high quality picture and sound, and we’ve also thrown in a 20 minute bonus ‘making of’ with each download,” explains producer Hanan Kattan.
Downloads are priced reasonably for both movies and the entire, much lauded soundtrack of female singers from I Can’t Think Straight. Actress Lisa Ray, who has been fighting a well-documented battle with cancer, asked people to support the legal movies in a statement on her ‘Yellow Diaries’ blog: “Working with Shamim and Hanan has been deeply inspiring and I would like to work with them again and again. I would like to continue to make my living as an actor committed to working on projects which illuminate and provoke. This can only happen if you express your support by buying the films.”
The company’s music division, Enlightenment Records, has also released the I Can’t Think Straight soundtrack as downloadable MP3 files, with individual songs priced to beat iTunes. Also available as a download by popular demand is Leonie Casanova’s haunting end credit song from The World Unseen called ‘Broken.’
